Gregg Rolie was the first vocalist for Journey, and sang for a very, very short time when Journey first formed, but was quickly replaced by Steve Perry, who recorded all their hits and is the only singer people know now.
Journey reunited with long-term frontman Steve Perry at their recent induction to the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, but their original lead vocalist, Gregg Rolie, has also revealed that he and lead guitarist Neal Schon have been discussing working together again. The two Journey co-founders previously worked together on Santana’s 2016 album, Santana IV, while Schon is due to appear on Rolie’s forthcoming solo album. During an interview with Radio.com ahead of the induction ceremony, Rolie hinted at the possibility of them working together in the context of Journey. The topic initially came up when Rolie was asked why he didn’t jam with Journey when they played a show with Santana last year. “Well, I’m not quite sure, other than there’s a couple of guys; I’m not in the band,” he said in response.
“Neal wanted me to do that, and I wanted to do it, and I think it would be tremendous for fans, but there was a couple guys that voted no.”He elaborated further, saying, “And so that’s the way it went. I think it’s a shame. People would’ve loved to have seen everybody on the stage gelling together. That’s what I got into doing this for, and having it be otherwise is kind of silly.
I don’t know the reasoning. I don’t care about it. If that’s what it is, that’s what it is. Neal and I will do more stuff, and that’s really where it’s at. Remember, between former Santana manager Herbie Herbert and Neal Schon, that’s who started this band. It’s always been Neal’s band.”Rolie concluded the interview by saying, “I love playing with him Schon, I always have. I’ve known him since he was 15.
I got him into Santana, for God sakes. So he and I have crossed paths so many times, and we’re older and kinder, so we’ll see what happens.”. Rollie I loved what you did in Journey I do love your singing. However you are no Steve Perry. I loved what Steve brought to Journey and were he took Journey. I Love were Arinal is taking Journey.
All of you are are so Bless with a gift that only God could have given. During that time you all needed one another. You all still do. No one is greater than another. Look where you all have been! Steve Perry as well; his path was for time and for always.
He well always remain in time. He is timeless. He was meant to do what he did for a season. Now his return will be timeless as I said. He only needs to come out on stage not even sing.
He was born for this. God had other plans for him. Rolie he still has wonderful plans for you listen for it.
If you think where you’ve been is all that. You have see nothing yet. Even at this of your life God has his hand on you your music and everything you do in it.
I will be listening for Journey, Steve Perry and many others from our time period. I just love music form those that put their heart into music. I want to repeat this so you’ll hear me; because you need to.
There are not many Steve Perry’s is this world. Why God choses send them into the world only He knows. Steve Perry is one of a kind. He was sent to Journey for a season. Has you God put it upon his heart to stop. I want you to know I have been praying for Journey for a very long time. Also many other Artist I make it my business to keep you all in prayer.
I know that being in TV business over a decade I see a lot. Sometimes more than I care to. Being a Producer it’s no easy when I see who had a gift and who thinks they do and doesn’t. I see it all the time.
Some times while I’m recording. I have do what I got to do.Well on I pray you receive this. I email this with a lot of respect. Jonathan Cain likes to portray himself as being a good Christian. He even recently released a Christian rock cd. But the guy is all about the almighty dollar these days. He no doubt does not want to share band profits with a sixth member, and his ego is too fragile to be willing to share the stage with another keyboardist of high reputation.
Pretty un-Christian-like traits if you ask me.Cain needs to either dedicate himself to continuing to move Journey foreword, or step aside. No more halfheartedly being in Journey. Work on new Journey music or step aside for someone who wants to work.
Roman Steve Perry is one of a kind, I repeat one of a kind. This man has something most Artist donor have.
He still has his voice class, one thing he doesn’t care what people think. Amen to that he real like you & me. He knows he human.
He will always be timeless because of his voice & because of the way he relates to his fans people in central. God not only gave him a voice; He gave him a very special gift to know when to stop. Move on where I want you to go. We’ll revisit music shy. God is not done with Steve Perry Roman not by far. All he has to do is walk on stage not sing the crowd will go wild. This is another gift God has given this man.
If he chooses to tour I for one will go see him. If he chooses not to; that’s alright by me. Don’t say he can’t sing with out assistance. Everyone has been judging this man enough already. Let him live has God intents him to. He don’t have that right. May peace be with you.
I BELIEVE CAIN IS THE ONE WHO GOT RID OF STEVE BY GOING THERE AND TELLING STEVE TO COME BACK NOW OR ELSE. DO IT NOW OR WE WILL REPLACE YOU. HOW DARE HE THE LITTLE HYPOCRITE. AND NEAL WENT ALONG WITH IT.THIS IS A GREAT DISAPPOINTMENT TO ME FROM NEAL WHO PERRY WAS GREAT FRIENDS WITH. STEVE HAD A MEDICAL PROBLEM. I KNOW OF THE BITCH’IN PAIN HIP SURGERY IS.
BITCH’EN I TELL YOU. AT THAT TIME I HAD MINE I WONDERED HOW OUR TROOPS COULD BE SO TERRIBLE WOUNDED IN THE FIELD AND SURVIVE THE PAIN BEFORE GETTING MEDICAL HELP. I BELIEVE THE PAIN ALONE COULD KILL A MAN. THERE’S ONLY SO MUCH A MAN CAN TAKE. I’M TALKIN ANYONE WOULD AND THERE WOUNDS ARE HUGE! I LOVE STEVE SO MUCH FOR DOING WHAT WAS RIGHT FOR HIM.
HE GAVE UP SO MUCH BUT THE EYES TRULY ARE THE MIRROR TO THE SOUL AND I COULD SEE LONELINESS, HURT, SORROW MANY TIMES IN HIS EYES FROM HIS PICTURES AND HIS MUSIC. BUT WHEN HE LAUGHS.THE SUN IS IN THAT LAUGH AND I JUST WANT TO HUG HIM. HIS BEST LOOK, WHEN HE’S AT GIANTS GAME IN HIS CAP AND HIS LUMBER JACK SHIRTS. HE LOOKS LIKE A KID. I LOVE THIS MAN. HE TRULY IS A NICE MAN. I JUST FEEL IT!

Perry also has a successful solo career, first between the mid-1980s and mid-1990s, making sporadic appearances in the 2000s and then returning to music full-time in 2018.Perry's singing voice has from prominent musical peers and publications; he has been dubbed 'The Voice', a originally coined. 76 on '100 Greatest Singers of All Time', Perry was inducted into the as a member of Journey on April 7, 2017. Contents.Early life Stephen Ray Perry was born in, to Portuguese parents.
He is an only child. Perry grew up interested in music, as his father, Raymond Perry (Pereira), was a vocalist and co-owner of radio station. Perry's parents ended their relationship when he was eight years of age, and he and his mother then moved to his grandparents' farm. In a September 2018 interview, Perry said, 'Things happened to me as a child that I still can't talk about – nothing to do with my parents, but things did happen.
It happened to a lot of kids, as I find out. There was nowhere to talk it out, so I got to sing it out instead.' On Perry's 12th birthday, his mother, Mary Quaresma, presented her son with a gold pendant; Perry wears the pendant for good luck. At age 12, Perry heard 's song ' on his mother's car radio, and it inspired him to become a singer.Perry's family moved to, during Perry's teen years. He attended high school there, drumming in the marching band as well as in extracurricular bands. After graduation he attended, in, where he sang first in the choir.
Perry's mother continued to encourage his musical growth during that time. In his early 20s, Perry moved to to start a band with 16-year-old future music producer, who co-wrote, played drums and guitar and sang. That band, Ice, wrote original material and were poised to 'make it' in the music business.
During the day in 1972 they recorded at the studios in Los Angeles while recorded his album by night. Upon returning to Sacramento, Ice disbanded as the band had no management, Mathews was still in high school, and the recordings went virtually unheard. In 1975, Perry moved to, where he formed a band called Pieces with (who had previously worked with ), Denver Cross, and Eddie Tuduri. After a year and a half, the group was unable to secure a record deal and disbanded.Perry then ended up in, outside of, where he fronted the band Alien Project in his mid-20s.
He nearly gave up music when the bassist of that band, Richard Michaels, was killed in an automobile accident. Perry returned to Lemoore and decided not to continue his singing career, but at the urging of his mother, Perry answered a call from, manager of struggling San Francisco-based band Journey. Journey era.
Main article:Original Journey organizer/manager Walter 'Herbie' Herbert had been given a demo of an Alien Project song, 'If You Need Me, Call Me', and was told by producer Scott Mathews that the young singer would be a great replacement for then current frontman. Fleischman had never signed with Herbert's company, preferring his previous manager and he had not fully coalesced with the band's then progressive rock style. Perry was brought on tour and to avoid alarming Fleischman, Perry was clandestinely included as roadie 'John Villanueva's Portuguese cousin' and on the tour during a sound check in surreptitiously performed a song with Journey while Fleischman was away from the stage, and after that Herbert informed the band members of the lineup change.Perry brought a radically new, more -influenced style sense to the band's music, despite some grumblings from his new bandmates and fans of Journey's former progressive rock sound. He made his public debut on October 28, 1977 in San Francisco to a mixed reception. Perry eventually won over new fans on his first album with the group, which included a song he wrote called '.' The band's style had changed dramatically, but as Journey began to garner and media buzz over Infinity, Perry's arrival was fully accepted. Perry provided lead vocals on nine of Journey's albums: Infinity (1978), (1979), (1980), (1980, a Japanese movie soundtrack), (1980, a live album), (1981, which reached No.
1 on the ), (1983), (1986), and (1996). The single 'Open Arms' from Escape was their biggest hit single, charting at No. 2 for six weeks on the.During his Journey tenure, Perry also sang backing vocals on several songs, including the 1980 tracks 'The Iceman' (a nickname Hagar had for Scott Mathews) and 'Run For Your Life', and duetting with on the 1982 No. 17 hit single 'Don't Fight It'.In 1984, following the release of Frontiers and the tour supporting this effort, Perry released his first solo album, (the album's title was derived from the original name of Perry's earlier band Alien Project).
The record sold more than 2 million units, scoring the hit singles No. 3 ', written for his then-girlfriend Sherrie Swafford, and No. 18 'Foolish Heart'. The music video for 'Oh Sherrie' saw on.
'She's Mine' and 'Strung Out' were also released as singles from this project, which featured former Alien Project drummer on a few tracks, guitarist, and future judge on bass, among others. In 1985, Perry was one of 21 singers in the all-star benefit song '. He also recorded a song, 'If Only For the Moment, Girl' for the album. This song was added to the reissue of his album Street Talk. Also during this period Perry worked with the Irish folk-rock group Clannad on their 1987 album. While Perry was reuniting with Journey, his mother became ill.
The recording of Raised on Radio, which Perry was producing, was stop-and-go as he frequently returned to the to visit his mother, who died during the production of the album. It took a major toll on Journey to have intermittent recording sessions and a vocalist who was not with the band much of the time. Eventually, Perry became exhausted from the ordeal. Journey then disbanded in 1987 after the Raised on Radio tour. In 1988, Perry began to work on another solo album, Against the Wall, which he ultimately left unfinished (though several of the songs that were recorded for Against the Wall would appear on Perry's 1998 solo compilation, ).
A year later, on April 30, 1989, at the Shoreline Amphitheatre, in, Perry joined to perform Sam Cooke's ' and the Four Tops' '. He would also reunite with Journey at the tribute concert, 'Laughter, Love and Music' on November 3, 1991, at in San Francisco, performing ' and 'Lights'. Other than those three events, however, Perry mostly disappeared from the public eye for seven years, taking a break from the music industry. 1994 to 1998 In 1994 Perry released, his second solo effort. The album was successful, partly due to the Strange Medicine world tour. Journey's classic 1981–85 lineup reunited in 1996 to record Trial by Fire.
The album was a huge success, entering the Billboard charts at No. 3 and going platinum before year's end, but its triumph was short-lived. Before the Trial By Fire tour could begin, Perry suffered a hip injury while hiking in Hawaii and was unable to perform. Perry was diagnosed with a degenerative bone condition and a hip replacement was required, and as he was reluctant to rush into the surgery, Perry wanted to postpone the tour. The remaining members waited until 1998, nearly 17 months after Perry's injury, before making a decision on Journey's future.
Growing impatient and realizing the window of opportunity was closing to follow up the success of the platinum-selling Trial By Fire LP with a world tour, Journey members and met with Perry and presented an ultimatum that he either undergo hip replacement surgery so the tour could proceed upon his recovery, or a replacement singer would be hired. Still hesitant to undergo surgery and now apparently upset at his bandmates' intractability and their perceived meddling in personal health decisions, Perry announced that he was permanently leaving Journey. His lead vocal duties were later taken over by of, and nearly two years after the album's initial release, Journey began its long-postponed tour. Perry underwent successful hip replacement surgery in 1998 to correct the problem he had been diagnosed with two years earlier. He released the Greatest Hits + Five Unreleased later in 1998; the unreleased tracks included an original demo as well as selections from the abandoned Against the Wall CD. Also in 1998, Perry recorded two songs for the film, which can be found on the motion picture's soundtrack. During an episode of 's in 2001, Perry stated that he 'never really felt like he was part of the band'.
Former manager Herbie Herbert reacted as follows: 'That's like the Pope saying he never really felt Catholic.' In the 21st century Perry appeared on two tracks by Kauai, Hawaii artist Tommy Tokioka's album 'Happy To Be Living', singing backup vocals on songs 'I Wish You Were Mine' and 'An Angle Above Me' in 2000. '.while Tokioka was recording the album, he was struggling to hit the high notes. “I’d been in the studio for a while and my voice was kind of raspy that day,” he recalls. Tokioka made an offhanded comment to engineer and producer David Tickle that he wished Perry could help him out with background vocals. “He’s my all-time rock ‘n’ roll voice, and he can hit those notes lying down on the couch,” says Tokioka. Four days later, Tickle called Tokioka.
“David asked me if I believed in angels and I said, ‘yes!’ And he says, ‘Good, because Steve Perry is on the island,'” recalls Tokioka.' Perry collaborated with musician on a song titled 'Can't Let You Go' for Golub's Soul Sessions album, which was released in 2003.
Perry provided vocals on the mostly instrumental jazz track. Golub described his encounter with Perry: “he (Perry) dropped by the studio one day. When Steve Perry heard the track for 'Can't Let You Go,' he said, 'I can easily picture a vocal on that song.' So we immediately set up a mic and said 'Let's do it.' 'Perry appeared with other Journey members at a ceremony on the on January 21, 2005, after previously stating it was unlikely that he would ever stand with the band again.
He indicated that, though it was a good experience, his rejoining Journey is not likely. However, he has also stated 'never say never, unless you mean never, nevertheless' when the issue of returning to Journey has been mentioned. In 2005, Perry co-produced 'A Brand New Start,' a track on a solo album for former lead vocalist. Perry also provided co-vocals and background vocals for the track, among the many songs he and Pack co-wrote shortly after the. That album, released in September 2005, includes of two of Pack's biggest hits with Ambrosia, ' and '.'
During the, the adopted Journey's ' as their unofficial team anthem. As a result, Perry (an avid fan) was asked to attend the and even traveled with the White Sox to Houston where Perry joined the players on the field and in the locker room as they celebrated their championship. In late 2006, Perry's two solo projects, Street Talk and For the Love of Strange Medicine (both featuring previously unreleased material), and his Greatest Hits CD were remastered and re-released. Sony Legacy released: The Very Best of Steve Perry on January 13, 2009.As a San Francisco Giants fan, Perry was spotlighted during their 2010 World Championship run.
