Good afternoon, fellow roleplayers!I've been thinking of revisting some 'old' rpgs games from my retired PS2 and XBOX 360 consoles. As for the Golden era of PS2, I've grabbed Rogue Galaxy and FFXII, as well as Persona 4 and Disgaea 2 (but I'll probly ditch the later for the PSP port, considering it's portable and all).As for the XBOX 360 scene, I inherited a good amount of RPG games for the Microsoft console, but, alas, never got the time to play them. I'm talking about the three FFXIII games as well as the Mass Effect trilogy, Dragon Age collection, and the pearls that are these two:Infinite UndiscoveryLast RemnantWhat are your thoughts about them? Should I embrace them thoroughly or just go for a standard gameplay focused on story and minimal completion? And as always after a long post: here's a potato cookie ??TL;DR: Thoughts on the two games listed on the subject. Infinite Undiscovery:I actually really enjoyed. It is a FLAWED game in a lot of ways, don't get me wrong. But the world is great and the combat is decent. The characters are hit or miss, but overall pretty enjoyable.
Infinite Undiscovery. Uneven graphics and choppy combat against a great art style and intriguing story - this game's caught between sticking to what it knows and the temptation to go out and be a. Well I was interested in this til I read that it has FFXII style combat. I will take a huge pass on that trash. I was hoping for a more Star Ocean style combat.

The game's biggest issue is really just how unfinished it feels (ironic given the name) it seems to rush to it's own conclusion right as the world starts to feel bigger and more exciting. Worth a play in my opinion. Don't play on the hardest difficult though.Oh, and it's endgame/postgame is pretty solid. The Last Remnant:I have a love/hate relationship with this game. On one hand the world and lore are great, and so are some of the characters. The CONCEPT for battles is also really unique, but the execution I think ultimately fails. The main character is also just AWFUL (worse than Vaan, IMO).
But I do think due to the fact that the game is just so damn unique, it's worth giving a shot.Funny enough, these are 2 of the 5 games I call the 'weird era of JRPGs' rounding out this lineup would be Nier, Eternal Sonata, and Resonance of Fate. Oddly enough, I like them all. Infinite Undiscovery was kind of confusing and difficult to learn how to play well. But I would say to play that before Last Remnant any day. Hell I'd even say to just not play Last Remnant at all.I say this because (having just got the platinum trophy on a first play through this week) the game is incredibly unfun. It's all left to chance.
Whether it's the actions available to use each round, or whether you will get obliterated in one turn, there's very little you can deliberately choose to do without limiting your overall capabilities. It also suffers from the whole the-more-you-fight-the-harder-the-game-becomes thing like FF8 kinda while at the same time not having levels and instead having fairly random stat increases after battles with many enemies or very few but strong enemies. The story was actually really lame, too.
Felt like 10hrs of story and 60hrs of fighting (and another 20hrs of game overs). The passive battle system did allow me to play a 2nd game at the same time though - so you can play a handheld on your list too. I played both and Last Remnant has stuck in my mind over time more than Infinite Undiscovery, but both are probably worth a shot. I just remember with Last Remnant you had to be careful with how you levelled because it was easy to scupper yourself a bit, but once you worked out the system I found the battles really rewarding and different, and some of the harder bosses were a good challenge!I remember the post-game content in Infinite Undiscovery being really tough and didn’t get very far. There were also a lot of achievements that were missable iirc so if you’re wanting to 100% it could be quite annoying.Over probably both of these I’d recommend checking out Lost Odyssey, Resonance of Fate and Star Ocean: The Last Hope. And slightly off topic as it’s an action rpg, Kingdoms of Amalur.
